Michigan Senate Race Heats Up as Bill Huizenga Weighs 2026 Bid.

Michigan Congressman Bill Huizenga is seriously considering a run for U.S. Senate in 2026, setting the stage for a high-stakes Republican primary in a state that’s become central to the GOP’s plans to retake the upper chamber. The news comes after Democratic Sen. Gary Peters announced he will not seek re-election, opening up a pivotal Senate seat in one of America’s top political battlegrounds.

Huizenga, a Republican from western Michigan, is leveraging his strong donor network and deep political connections as he evaluates a potential campaign. Known for his conservative principles and alignment with America First policies, Huizenga’s entry could energize Michigan’s Republican base heading into a critical election year.

“My goal is to ensure we have a strong, principled conservative who can actually win in Michigan,” Huizenga said. He emphasized that Michigan’s changing political landscape demands a candidate with both grassroots credibility and the resources to compete in one of the most expensive Senate races expected in the 2026 cycle.

Also eyeing the seat is former Congressman Mike Rogers, a seasoned politician with national security credentials and prior leadership experience in the House. If both candidates move forward, the Michigan GOP could witness one of its most competitive and closely watched primaries in decades.

Endorsements are expected to play a major role in the race, with former President Donald Trump’s backing seen as a potential game-changer in the primary. Trump’s influence remains strong in Michigan, particularly among the conservative grassroots voters who will likely decide the Republican nominee.

With control of the U.S. Senate at stake, the 2026 Michigan Senate race is already shaping up to be one of the most bruising and costly contests in the nation. Republicans see the open seat as one of their best opportunities to flip a key state and regain a majority, making every strategic move and endorsement critical from day one.
